Solid Aluminum Pen + Stylus

Same great pen, now in Aerospace grade 6061 Aluminum. It’s a 35% lighter alternative to our Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus. Plus, now with newly improved, stronger threads!

Aerospace Grade Aluminum with a touch of Titanium
These pens are made using lightweight 6061 aerospace aluminum and solid titanium for the clip. We feel this combination of materials deserved a new periodic element symbol, so we gave it one and laser engraved  “Ai” on every pen clip. The “A” is from the first letter of the aluminum periodic symbol and the small “i” was chosen from the titanium element Ti to represent the touch of titanium.

I’m loving this pen and I wear it in my shirt pocket all day every day without fail. I got the silver one and it’s silky smooth with a real nice balance. Excellent fit and finish (very tight tolerances). I’ve used 6 different types of refill in it just for fun. I got aluminum instead of titanium because it’s lighter and I think it’s more likely that I will eventually lose this than that I will break it. The construction is robust. In particular I love the strength of the (titanium) clip. Securely holds it in my pocket and I have no worries about it losing its spring. I don’t use the stylus, just the little plug. The pen is also very refined looking. There are other pens (like the bolt) that are as good from an engineering and usefulness perspective, but they don’t look as professional and I have to dress up somewhat for work every day.

When the cap is posted the balance is very different from a normal pen, as others have pointed out. However, I’m trying to learn to write with my wrist instead of my fingers and this has actually helped me do so. I always post it these days despite the fact that it looks a little odd.

The biggest surprise with this is how perfect the fit and finish is in every respect. No wiggle, no gaps, no scratching when you screw the pieces together. All 6 different kinds of refills I’ve used worked like the pen was made for them…no looseness or difficulty inserting. Great design.

Couple of possible negatives I have noticed:

    * Aluminum conducts heat very quickly. If it’s a cold day and you grab this pen you will really feel it suck your heat away. Not sure how true that is of the titanium pen…titanium conducts heat much more slowly but it is still metal.

    * The lid screw doesn’t have any friction. It is real smooth and feels nice, but it has actually come unscrewed few times in my pocket. The pen isn’t short enough to come out and get anything inked, but this is the only real flaw I’ve found in the design. For example, if there was a spring in the cap that pushed against the pen body to create friction (like there is inside the pen body behind the refill) the cap would not be so easily removed.

    * The cap only takes a second to screw off, but that second feels like an eternity when you are used to clicky pens and those with pull caps. On the other hand, it gives you a second to appreciate the pen quality. Many expensive pens are this way.

    * A metal pen reverberates more loudly when the writing tip scratches on paper, so you may notice audible scratching more than you used to. Makes you want to use a real smooth refill, like a uniball rather than the scratchier but still good pilot G2.

    * For most of my shirt pockets, this pen is just about half a centimeter too long to be optimal. I wish they had changed the design to shave off a very little bit of length. It’s not that it comes out or anything, but I would like it if it nestled down just a hair more.

    * The part of the pen you hold is rather thinner than a typical pen. Personally I like this better but some people might not. There is also not much friction for your fingers. The three grooves are too close to the front of the pen to appreciably help with holding. Maybe if they went all the way to the part where the cap screws on…

By the way, I tried using thread lock on the plug at the back (though it has never come unscrewed). Now I know that that thread lock does not work on anodized aluminum. It polymerizes in the presence of iron or copper ions. There aren’t any on this pen. You learn something new every day.

This pen is literally with me any time I am wearing clothes (not pajamas). So it’s already become an important part of my persona and I’m very attached to it. I don’t like weight in my pocket, so I’m glad I got the aluminum. The titanium would have been fine too based on this weight. This pen will last a long time and gives me great flexibility in what refill I will use. It looks great and feels great and I’m glad I purchased it.

This is the best pen I’ve ever used. It has the perfect weight and balance. The aluminum feels great and looks awesome. It works with every ink I’ve ever wanted to use. I’ve had all my friends buy this pen and I’m even thinking about getting another for myself. One for home and one for work.

I carry this pen with me everywhere. I am actually excited when I need to jot something down. The pen feels really nice in your hand and it I like how it writes.
I need to remind myself often about the stylus because I am not used to using one but again it is nice to use it with the iPad just because of the nice weight and feel in the hand.
I look forward to any pen these guys put out. I also have the phx pen and again it is another very nice pen.

This is an absolutely excellent pen. I ordered the large/regular pen and it is light as a feather. Handles excellently and despite the fact that it is more delicate than its titanium “cousin”, it’s still a sturdy product and the machined aluminum’s texture feels great. It handles extremely well as a stylus for the iPad and my cell phone too. Definitely will be getting more of these as gifts for friends who would appreciate them. Keep it up Big i Design, and keep surprising us!
