Tl;dr – Something you don’t see very often these days = great product + great customer service

    Great product:
I bought solid titanium pen (chrome finish) about two years ago soon after these were successfully funded through kickstarter (congratulations!), and this is the only pen I’ve used since. I’ve been in college for the past 3 years, so the pen has seen a lot of use. Echoing many of the past reviews, the pen has a very solid feel (I once accidentally dropped it down two flights of stairs in the Student Center and nothing broke/bent/chipped. In fact I think it may have chipped the stairs…oops). Yes, the pen is heavy, but I’ve found that it hasn’t caused any hand fatigue even after writing non-stop for a three hour essay exam. I find that hand fatigue is from gripping the pen too hard rather than the pen being too heavy. When I write, my hand is only there to guide the pen across the paper. The weight of the pen is what draws out the ink.
The shallow grip indentations do not bother me at all. For some reason, I never liked gripping the pen so close to the tip anyways. My grip falls somewhere near the point where the cap screws onto the body.
Aesthetically, this pen is superb. There is little disruption in the flow of the design when the cap is screwed on the tip, or when it’s attached to the back. The clip is long and springy, even after approximately 2 years of constantly being clipping to my jean pocket with daily activity.

    Customer service:
The only small issue I had with the pen occurred just a few days ago. I emailed big idea design and got a response the next day (1+ for quick and courteous response). They promptly sent me a device and emailed me instructions on how to fix the problem (1+ for tracking and fast shipping).

So far my experience has been nothing but positive, and it’s rare to find a company that makes such well machined products coupled with great customer service.

I would definitely recommend this pen or any other titanium pen from these guys. (I would, especially that new Ti Click Classic–my mind says yes, but my college-level budget says no)

I recently received the black version of the Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus. Nice pen. As the name implies, it’s got a nice solid feel. The cap screws on just right/smoothly; not too tight, not loose, and not too many turns. The grip could be a bit thicker, but overall there’s a good quality feel to the pen overall. Have been using it for about a week now with the included Pilot G2 refill, which is also good.

Only thing that’s just OK about the pen is the rubber stylus tip. It works well, but you can feel a solid ‘edge’ underneath, which is fine if you hold the pen perpendicular to your tablet/device surface. However, I usually hold the pen at ~30 deg (from vertical), so you can feel the edge tap the device surface every so often. My guess is that the ridge is that deep so that the replaceable stylus tip has enough surface area to grip. Not a big deal, but enough to hold it back from a 5-star rating.

Greatest pen I have ever owned.

    (verified owner):

I purchased the pen from the website. In general it is a nice pen and the refill functionality is great. I have a few complaints that are worth considering but may not be major issues to most people:
    1) The thread on the top of the pen is wearing down and when I screw on the cap it easily falls off now
    2) I find the bottom of the pen too thin, considering the thickness of the body of the pen it becomes relatively narrow at the base, I would have preferred a slightly thicker base to hold while writing
    3) Like others mentioned the pen, with the cap screwed on the top, is rather long and somewhat off balance, without the cap the balance is better but I feel the pen is a bit too short.
    4) I lost the replacement screw cap rather quickly as it came lose as I was using the pen and didn’t notice it was missing until later.

I use the pen quite a bit as my primary pen.

I was a Kickstarter backer and for the Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus and while I am satisfied with the pen, there are plenty of pros and cons that any purchaser should be aware of. I intentionally waited a bit to write this review so I had enough usage under my belt to give this a full and fair review.

Pros – Beautiful look. I have the matte black version and out of the box it’s gorgeous. The pen is sleek, modern and stylish. The titanium brings some heft and it feels substantial. Also, the stylus is great. The compatibility with various refills is legit and shows how innovative a design the Big I Design team came up with. The stylus and clip are great – I particularly love the little “i” on the underside of the clip.

Cons – The durability of the (black) finish has not been great. It is definitely wearing off a bit, particularly on the edges and corners – along the top of the cap and clip. All this with very moderate and gentle use – I sit behind a desk 90% of my day and take good care of the pen, which is not my everyday use pen. The balance of the pen when the cap is posted is off, it make it far to top-heavy to write with for an extended period of time.

Overall, I want to like this pen more than I do. It’s got so much innovation and it’s so good looking. However, at the end of the day it’s just not as useable as I had hoped so I’m left a bit underwhelmed.

I was a backer of two (one black, one matte silver) full size pens on Kickstarter. First of all, the pen is definitely aesthetically pleasing. The minimalistic design has already drawn multiple compliments from jealous coworkers, and I think the weight of the pen is perfect (although I have to say a couple of my friends (especially females) thought it was a tad too heavy). The stylus tip works great, much better than some of the squishy ones i’ve seen on the market. Overall I still think this is one of the best pens I’ve ever owned at this price range. The titanium body and the sleek and simple design alone makes this a great pen, and the versatility of refills is the icing on the cake.
Lastly, the designers kept us in the loop during the entire kickstarter process, with status updates and delays being properly communicated to us with photos and explained in layman’s terms.

I backed the kickstarter for both sizes of pen, and I’m amazed at how great they turned out. They were a little behind schedule due to manufacturing issues, but the final product is amazing.

These are my new favorite pens. I’d be happier with one of these vs. a $300 plastic (“Precious Resin”) pen from some of the famous brands…

  8. 4 out of 5

It’s great to see the final result of this kickstarter project. Although the pen did take some time to get and there were production delays the pen turned out very nice. I was very impressed with the packaging and the pen feels like a premium pen, it has a nice weight to in your hand. All in all I’m very happy with 2 pens. Thanks guys! You stood behind your project even when you were behind and didn’t shy away from backers questions, excellent work!

    1. Compatible with over 30 different types of refills. Personally tested and tried with Pilot G2, Uni-ball Jetstream, Zebra Sarasa and ALL Mont Blanc Rollerball, Fineliner and even Ballpoint (needs adapter) to the Ohto Ceramic Rollerball. The uniqueness of each of these refills gives me endless pleasure swapping everyday!

Would love to try with Pilot Hi-Tec-C Cavalier but sadly, this is not found in my part of the world 🙁 If anyone would be kind enough to recommend a shop, I would be grateful.

    2. Well-constructed titanium.
To me, the feel of the titanium barrel as medium weight and features a threaded cap that also posts on the end of the pen. Although lengthy but the weight of the pen is just right for me.

    3. As I don’t really use the stylus tip, immediately replaced with a threaded plug. With the proliferation of tablet PCs, these pen+stylus will remain in demand.

In fact, am contemplating ordering another one; this time the polished silver version.

I’ve only had this pen for about 24 hours and I love everything about it. The look, the weight, and the feel. I am even surprised at how much I like the refill that came with it. I like to write with thicker points but I think I just switched. This pen feels like something that will be part of my daily routine for a lifetime, and hopefully my son’s lifetime as well. This is truly a fine instrument.

    (verified owner):

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. The weight, the look, the fact I can put my beloved Pilot G2 .38 refill into a pen that didn’t come from Office Depot. I bought the black finish, but may be back for a chrome one! Thanks!

  12. 3 out of 5

I have to say, that while I would love to give this pen 5 stars, I can not in good faith give it a full star rating. And, part of me feels that 3 stars might even be a touch generous. While the look of the pen is very slick, there are some little problems which make this pen not so great for me.

My biggest complaint is the sharpness of the threads where the cap screws into the pen body. When writing with the pen, these sharp threads rub on my fingers uncomfortably. Almost everything else is smooth, but the part of the pen where I grip is sharp. If the cap is screwed onto the back of the pen and I hold it higher up, the writing tip just feels too far away from my fingers, and the weight of the pen does not feel right (a touch too heavy). With the cap off of the pen, and holding it above the sharp threads, the pen then feels too short, and my hand rubs on the sharp threads where the cap screws on.

With the cap screwed on, the pen feels a little too long and a touch off balance, and with it off too short.

The rubber stylus tip has a crack in it. Not sure if it came that way, or it is from the sharp edge of the cap nicking it. I have been using the Ti for 3 days, and it seems like the rubber tip should hold up a little better.

Overall, I feel a little underwhelmed with the Ti. The finish on it is really nice. I got the chrome one. I like the design. The packaging is great. I like that it accepts so many different refills. The usability issues for me, though, feel fairly significant, and I am not sure that I will really use this pen a whole lot.

My matter silver Solid Titanium pen and matte black XTS arrived today and they are excellent! Glad I found Kickstarter when I did, and it was a blast watching this project progress both through the funding campaign and especially the production updates. Thanks for the look behind the scenes on these amazing pens. I plan to buy a few more to give as gifts. I also posted a review on Youtube:

Lucky backer from the Kickstarter campaign as well. Just got the rewards today and I have to say the quality is top notch! I got the chrome and silver ones and I have to say the pens are just a joy to write with. And you can add whatever refill you want in this bad boy is just fantastic!

The pens are a great gift for a special someone that has EVERYTHING. I mean if that person has everything, they must own a tablet of some sort and they will be able to use this fantastic, quality made multi-use, titanium pen!

I was a Kickstarter backer and got my pen in Doncaster, UK today. It oozes quality and feels great to write with. Well weighted. A real treat. No regrets. Thank you very much indeed.

  16. 4 out of 5

I’m both a pen fancier and a bit of a techno geek, so when I saw this on Kickstarter, I figured great, I’ll get two cool titanium pens( a very cool metal), I keep one, and have one for a present.

    I’m keeping them both.
I’ve been designing jewelry for quite a long time and am a designer at work and these pens work on both those levels. Visually pleasing ( and simple is very hard to do) and techno very nice.
Only surprise is the size, these are big pens, particularly with the caps screwed on. But they look great, write great, and they are mine.

Ever consider a mechanical pencil and or fountain pen?

  17. 5 out of 5

I was a Kickstarter backer of this project from the beginning, and if the way these guys ran their Kickstarter project is any indication, they’ll be very successful. Throughout the process they made it clear they were not going to cut corners at all. The attention to detail shows. I got my pen 2 days ago and, as a professional writer, I can attest to how great this pen is. The weight is perfect in your hand. The craftsmanship is second to none. And the fact that they made it refillable with easy-to-find refills is the icing on the cake.

Way to go Big i Design. You’ve created the perfect pen – one that I will use for a long time.

  18. 5 out of 5

Love it so far. It works great as a soft tip stylus for my tablet, and feels great while writing. I purchased this item from their Kickstarter project, and it was fun to watch the process. They were very forthcoming with information throughout the process, sending photos of the pens being made. While there were delays, we always knew about them and saw photographic proof of what causes were.

I would definitely back another project by them and purchase more of their great design ideas.

I’ve always had an obsession with pens. This pen is incredible. Love the quality and craft, and it feels great in your hand. Their commitment to quality is evident in this product. Glad I got 2.

  20. 5 out of 5

This is seriously one pen to rule them all. I backed both versions of the pen; bead blasted in the regular size and matte black for the XTS. Both of these pens are beautiful with a prefect balance of weight and quality. The XTS has the ideal size that fits perfectly in my hand. The stylus tip is one of the most responsive ones I have used to date, probably equal to that of the Maglus stylus. This pen is just the complete package in versatilty from the 30+ refills to the removeable parts that can be swapped out and used between either pen. I can just feel the quality every time I hold this pen in my hand. Outstanding work on designing such a fantastic writing instrument that I look forward to using everyday. This is a must buy for any pen addict.

I backed BIGiDESIGN’s Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus Kickstarter campaign – I’m glad I did! The pen is awesome, perfect weight and writes very well! I haven’t had the chance to test the refill capabilities yet, but by the list of the compatible cartridges I reckon this frankly stunning piece of titanium design should last me a long time. (In case you’re wondering, I got the matte black version.) The stylus and felt sleeve that come with the pen are handy too! Thanks guys!

  22. 5 out of 5

Just as good as I thought they would be. I backed this project because I was looking for pens like this and it seems the only way to get them was to have them made. Loved getting the progress reports too! One for me and one for a gift. Fantastic – thank you very much. Now… onto fountain pens – what can your creative guys think of in that space?

  23. 5 out of 5

I’m one of the lucky backers of the Solid Titanium Pen + Stylus Kickstarter campaign to have already received his reward. This pen is a sleek, dare I say sexy, writing instrument. It’s a lot lighter than your brain anticipates, because from the appearance, it looks like it should be fairly hefty. Yet, when you pick it up, it’s really light, but still well balanced and solid feeling. Both the included pen cartridge and the rubber stylus tip have excellent response and feel in their respective uses. I love that I can replace both the ink cartridge with almost any refill I prefer, and also replace the rubber stylus tip should it eventually get worn down, or if BIGiDESIGN develops other tip shapes and materials in the future. Oh, and I can also swap in the flat capped end if I want to use it as a dedicated pen. The threads for the cap, body, and plug end are machined with aircraft precision, and there’s a lovely mechanical feel and sound that you just don’t get even on an expensive Mont Blanc, because those are made with ‘precious resin’ aka over-priced plastic! For a tiny fraction of the cost of a ‘luxury’ pen, I now own a versatile precision writing instrument made out of some of the toughest and most exotic metal on Earth. If it’s good enough for jet fighters, racing engines, and $10,000 bike frames, it’s good enough for my pen!
